The most important and well-known Manzai competition in Japan
“M” stands for “Manzai“, a form of stand-up comedy mainly by 2 performers.
Generally, Manzai involves 2 characters. One is “Boke” (a funny man) and the other one is “Tsukkomi” (a straight man). It’s the interaction between them who constantly play off each other.
It is said that Manzai culture can trace its origin back more than 1,000 years ago, but the name “Manzai” was created in Osaka in Taisho era around 1933.
“M-1 Grandprix” is an annual Manzai competition which is considered as the most prevalent Manzai competition in Japan and broadcast live in December. In 2019, 5090 groups joined the competition and 10 groups advanced to the final.
Comedy duos or groups of less than 7 persons with less than 15 years experience can join. The winner can get 10 million yen prize.
It is said that “M-1 can change the winner’s life”. For example, “Milk Boy”, a winner in 2019 appeared on TV only for 4 times before winning the competition. However, they appeared on TV about 50 times in a month after the competition. Their monthly income has been increased by about 7.3 times. It is like a “Japanese Dream”!

- 2001年に開始された漫才グランプリ
- M-1の「M」は漫才のM。決勝会場はF-1, K-1を意識したキラキラなセットが特徴。
- 「漫才」とは、主に二人組で行い、滑稽なことを言い合って演じる演芸の一種。
- 一般的には「ボケ」と「つっこみ」と呼ばれる役割を演じる。
- 漫才に似た文化は平安時代に始まり、大正時代に大阪で「漫才」として誕生。
- 優勝賞金は1000万円
- 決勝戦は毎年12月に全国ネットで生放送される
- 参加資格は結成15年までの2名以上6名以下の漫才師
- 2019年は5040組の漫才師がエントリー
- 決勝戦には、準決勝で選ばれた9組、決勝戦当日に選ばれた敗者復活戦勝者1組の合計10組が出場する。
- M-1で優勝すると人生が変わると言われている。たとえば、2019年優勝のミルクボーイは、12/22の決勝戦が2019年におけるテレビ出演5本目だったが、大会後の1ヶ月で約50本に出演した。また、年収は大会前月収23万円だったが、2020年4月は月収170万となったと明かしている。
